working as a dramaturg

Dramaturgy is practiced across multiple artforms, job roles and employment types – and the pathways into it are just as varied. Here you'll find links to training opportunities and advice on employment.

employment

Dramaturgs tend to be employed either as freelancers on a project-by-project basis, by artistic companies and buildings, or within universities – and sometimes all of these at once.

Institutions with HR departments will have their own hiring terms and practices, but the landscape for freelance dramaturgs is complex and open to exploitation.

Because of that, our working group on employment guidelines, contracts and fees for dramaturgs has been developing a suite of documents to help employers and and employees collaborate equitably.

Our dramaturgs' contract package is available free to d'n members, and for other individuals and organisations to purchase.

dramaturgy courses

A selection of dramaturgy courses from around the world.

This list is still being compiled, and will be maintained intermittently by d'n volunteers. If a course is missing, or a link doesn't work, please contact us.
